CHI CAO, STAR OF THE FEATURE FILM "MAO'S LAST DANCER," LEADS CAST
OF BALLET HAWAII'S "NUTCRACKER"
Ballet Hawaii was thrilled to announce that
Chi Cao, Birmingham Royal Ballet principal dancer and star of the Bruce
Beresford film "Mao's Last Dancer," joined a distinguished cast and more
than 160 dancers in Ballet Hawaii's 2011 production of "Nutcracker" this
holiday season at Honolulu's Blaisdell Concert Hall.
The fairy-tale magic
began at 8:00 p.m. on Friday December 16 with a festive opening night for
this stellar production.
"Chi Cao is a virtuoso classical dancer and it is an honor to welcome him
to Honolulu as he interprets the role of Cavalier in our 2011 'Nutcracker'
production," said Ballet Hawaii artistic director Pamela Taylor Tongg. "Not
only is it a thrill for our young dancers from across Hawaii to rehearse and
perform with an artist of his caliber, it adds a new level of artistic and
creative innovation to have Chi Cao part of our time-honored production."
Rounding out the cast were Sterling Hyltin and Andrew Veyette, both
principal dancers with New York City Ballet. Ballet Hawaii is also honored to
welcome Broadway start John Selya, who most recently starred in the new Twyla
Tharp Broadway musical "Come Fly Away, "
the 2009 Broadway revival of "Guys and Dolls, "
as well as "Damn Yankees" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'." Born and
raised in New York City, Selya's dance career was inspired when, at age 10,
he saw his sister perform in "The Nutcracker."
In addition, Ballet Hawaii warmly welcomes the return of three dancers who
are familiar faces to Honolulu audiences, Carolina Ballet's Lilyan Vigo
Ellis, Timour Bourtasenkov and Gabor Kapin. Beloved for their beautiful
interpretation, Vigo Ellis and Bourtasenkov were featured in the 2010
production of "Nutcracker." Carolina's Gabor Kapin is also well-known to
local audiences: He starred in Ballet Hawaii's recent "Romeo and Juliet"
production.
|
Ballet Hawaii’s "Nutcracker" boasted beautiful sets and lavish costumes,
choral accompaniment by the Hawaii Opera Theatre Youth Chorus, surprise
touches and of course, the captivating music of Tchaikovsky. The annual
production offered unique performance opportunities to aspiring young dancers
from a variety of backgrounds while sharing a time-honored holiday tradition
with the greater community. Based on the E.T.A. Hoffmann tale “The Nutcracker
and the Mouse King” and showcasing the unique Aloha spirit of holiday magic,
Ballet Hawaii's "Nutcracker" is what Christmas is all about.
The 2011 Ballet Hawaii production of "Nutcracker" was sponsored by
Honolulu Star-Advertiser, First
Insurance Co. of Hawaii, Pension Services Corp., Hawaii State Foundation on
Culture and the Arts, Wall2Wall, and Honolulu Mayor's Office of Culture and
Arts.
Ballet Hawaii also gratefully acknowledges its 2011/12 season sponsor, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Waikiki.

Summer Production at Kennedy Theatre at University of

Cool Ballet for a Hot Summer!
A Medley of American Dance

The 2010 Ballet Hawaii summer production,
Cool Ballet for a Hot
Summer, A Medley of American Dance, was presented on Saturday, August 21 and
Sunday, August 22 at the University of Hawaii, features three
beautiful ballets.
The summer production includes “By George!” – set to the music of George
Gershwin, choreography by Tom Pazik; “Serenade” – set to the music of
Tchaikovsky, choreography by George Balanchine; and “Trio” – set to the
music of Bach, choreography by Tom Pazik.
“By George!” is a witty and whimsical backstage view of a
Broadway-style musical, complete with off-stage flirtations and comical
misunderstandings. Choreographer Tom Pazik injects the ballet with an
ingenious sense of humor, letting the audience in on various sight gags
and missed cues. Set entirely to the hits of George Gershwin, the ballet
was designed to recall a simpler time, when larger-than-life musical
productions were the order of the day.
“Serenade” is a milestone in the history of dance. It is the first
original ballet Balanchine created in America and is one of the signature
works of New York City Ballet’s repertory. Originating as a lesson in
stage technique, Balanchine worked unexpected rehearsal events into the
choreography. When one student fell, he incorporated it. Another day, a
student arrived late, and this too became part of the ballet.
Choreography by George Balanchine © The George Balanchine Trust
“Trio” features three movements for only three dancers and demands
speed, stamina and technique. Pazik, who created more than eighty ballets
in his lifetime, infused “Trio” with playfulness and poetry.

Broadway
Jems presents a Benefit concert for
Ballet Hawaii
September 12, 2008 7:30 pm
September 13, 2008 7:30 pm
September 14, 2008 2:00 pm
The show was a Craig Schulman Production and benefits Ballet
Hawaii.
Craig Schulman, Cris Groenendaal and Kevin Gray--each of whom has
starred as "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway or in the national tour
of the hit Andrew Lloyd Webber musical--returned to the Hawaii Theatre
September 12-14 for three performances only!
According to Schulman, this is the world premiere of "Three Phantoms
in Concert Return." The new musical program features solos, duets and
trios from classic Broadway shows ranging from "Guys and Dolls" to "
Les Miserables," "Miss Saigon," City of Angels," "Chicago," "Big River" and,
of course, "The Phantom of the Opera."
Joining the Three Phantoms was Ballet Hawaii, performing "Masquerade,"
accompanied by Don Conover on the Hawaii Theatre's 1922 Robert Morton Theatre
Organ and percussionist William Wiley.
Schulman, Groenendaal and Gray were accompanied by Sue Anderson, who has
served as music director for such Broadway musicals as "CATS" and who most
recently has conducted "Chitty, Chitty, Bang Bang" and "Spamalot" in New York.

The show was presented with sponsorship from Starwood Hotels & Resorts
Waikiki.
This was a benefit for
Ballet Hawaii |
3 Phantoms
After their sold-out engagement in 2006 and Kevin Gray's subsequent starring
as Scar in the long-running "Lion King" last year, audiences have
clamored for the show, so "The Three Phantoms Return!"

Schulman is a popular favorite from his engagements as Jean Valjean in
"Les Miserables" at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Groenendaal, a veteran of
such Sondheim Broadway shows as "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum" opposite Nathan Lane and Whoopie Goldberg, "Sunday in the Park
with George" and "Passion," played the title role in
"Phantom" in both of
its 1990's runs at the Blaisdell. Gray not only has toured
internationally in "The Lion King" but also has starred in
"Miss Saigon"
and "The King and I."
