Giving Tuesday 2020

2020 has been an exceptionally difficult year for arts organizations including Ballet Hawaii.  With the cancellation of traditional performances, in-person training, and fundraising events due to COVID, we have found ourselves having to think outside the box to move forward.  Maintaining the high standard of excellence Ballet Hawaii offers in its dance performances, training and outreach has been the top priority. We are deeply appreciative of the community support and individual gifts we have received this year.  That support has allowed us to continue offering exciting new opportunities for our students and fans this year.  Take a look at what we’ve been up to in 2020 below.

Virtual Master Class Series

Ballet Hawaii gathered an incredible, diverse faculty for a one-of-a-kind Virtual Master Class experience.  Our students, along with other students from across the country, logged in to our virtual platform to take ballet classes with amazing guest faculty from around the globe.  Our guest faculty included Erica De La O, Sonia Dvorak, Francisco Estevez, Robert Fairchild, Katherine Hartsell, Tracy Jones, Lesley Rausch, Cira Robinson, Margaret Severin-Hansen, Kristopher Wojtera, Danielle Tolmie, Mark Tucker, and Katie Williams.

Dancing Inside the Box

So much of what we do as artists has become modified by having to dance at home. Our Dancing Inside the Box series gave students the opportunity to create dance designed in their own space and helped them to develop their own unique artistic voice. Each of our dancers was paired with a faculty mentor, with whom they met virtually to choreograph and rehearse their pieces.

Virtual Ballet Princess Camp

Ballet Hawaii has traditionally offered Ballet Princess Camp each summer at our Honolulu and Waipahu studio locations.  This year, our teachers redesigned the week-long program to be delivered on a virtual platform to our youngest budding ballerinas.  Virtual Ballet Princess Camp brought the joy and magic of ballet directly into our tiny ballerinas’ living rooms!

The amazingly generous Deborah Glazier and Stasia Droze Jost put their incredible talents to work for Ballet Hawaii in creating a beautiful Public Service Announcement on the arts.  The creation of #ArtsBeyondCOVID was a collaborative effort that included Ballet Hawaii students, teachers, and amazing community partners.

Bluewater Outdoor Ballet Classes

Due to the amazing generosity of some community partners, Ballet Hawaii has been given access to an outdoor stage that we have been able to adapt for outdoor ballet classes (in compliance with city and state mandates).  Our students have been training exclusively on virtual platforms since March, but in October we were able to launch Bluewater Open Ballet Classes!
